The project: Network expansion Obfelden – Samstagern

With the expansion of the new Zurich power line, Swissgrid is setting a milestone for the region's energy supply. The Obfelden–Samstagern project is a major grid expansion undertaking in Switzerland and places the highest demands on safety, technology, and design. This project is far more than just a simple pipeline expansion:

  • Voltage increase: The voltage will be increased from 150 kV to 220 kV to prepare the "Zurich power highway" for the future.
  • Complex infrastructure: The project requires the construction of new masts, the relocation of existing lines, and the underground cabling of sections (such as on the Uetliberg).
  • Impressive dimensions: The new masts reach heights of up to 85 meters. For comparison: That's almost the same height as Zurich's Grossmünster.
  • Multimodal use: In some sections, the line shares the route with the SBB railway power lines, which places the highest demands on coordination and maintenance safety.

The challenge: Focus on safety and acceptance

A project of this scale is subject to special public scrutiny. Swissgrid faces three key challenges here:

  • Aesthetics in recreational areas: The route runs through sensitive landscape areas. Bulky fall protection solutions would disrupt the appearance of the modern, solid-walled steel masts.
  • Security in residential areas: Since the masts are located close to residential areas and transport routes (A3), unauthorized access to the installations must be absolutely prevented.
  • Occupational safety in extreme situationsMaintaining 85-meter-high masts in all weather conditions is a physical strain for the staff.
